Art-Type Experience
A few reflective experiences from my childhood stand out as significant:
becoming aware of the otherness of particular vacation mornings
walking along the beach, an isolated impression of the vaulted
arches of a cathedral, the first sighting of the rings of Saturn,
realizing the metaphysical nature of the uroborous figure and
standing before Picasso's La Guernica. I am sure everyone can
recall similar experiences from their childhood that stand out
as poignant and meaningful. There is a sameness to these art-type
experiences. They provide the aesthetic bearing of an individuation
process. Heightened symbolic experiences take on different meanings
according to their belief systems and orientation rituals, but
they are all examples of similar psychological cultural interchanges.
The experiences assimilate us into culture as they provide the
incorporating belief systems with a sense of ontological truth.
